§ Teaching and training

Thinking like a physicist is for everyone.

He has taught since 1993: physics labs at Alexandria University, secondary-school physics to five national curricula, then nuclear science, physics and chemistry at the Royal Military College of Canada and St. Lawrence College. Twelve courses are ready to teach, from science for non-majors to graduate reactor physics.

§3 Practice

What happens in his classroom.

Physics draws on chemistry, engineering and mathematics, so he teaches the connections as well as the content.

“The ability to think like a physicist is valuable for everyone.”

  1. 01

    Reactor in the room

A tour of the SLOWPOKE research reactor and a live neutron-activation experiment for RMC students.

  2. 02

    Hands before equations

Wooden blocks for vector analysis, molecular models, a simulated Rutherford gold-foil experiment.

  3. 03

    Everyday analogies

Sand against seawater for specific heat; the semiconductor revolution through the phone in the student’s pocket.

  4. 04

    Code as a lab bench

Stepped Python, MATLAB and C++ exercises, and students building their own simulations of abstract ideas.

  5. 05

    Concept maps

Linking enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy on one page before solving anything.

  6. 06

    Anonymous feedback, both ways

Anonymous peer grading of homework drafts, and an anonymous mid-semester evaluation of the course itself.

§4 Training

The teacher’s own training.

Teaching certification, reactor operation, radiation safety and Monte Carlo codes.
